General elections were held in Papua New Guinea between 13 June and 4 July 1987.〔Nohlen, D, Grotz, F & Hartmann, C (2001) ''Elections in Asia: A data handbook, Volume II'', p770 ISBN 0-19-924959-8〕 The result was a victory for the Pangu Party, which won 27 of the 109 seats. Voter turnout was 76.0%.
There were eighteen women candidates in total.
